Work and training: how to bridge the gap between skills and work experience

Despite the employment situation in our country has been unlocked a few months ago, finding work remains one of the biggest problems of a young graduate. Often we wonder why companies do not suppose to bind on new levers. New graduate students are still receptive and eager to learn; Why are not they hired with an apprenticeship contract and properly formed? In this article we try to answer this question.

The company and the graduate

The apprenticeship contract is an excellent tool that the Italian state has made available to companies and young workers. Unfortunately, its potential is not captured as you would expect, especially because this contract is often used to hire people already formed. It is a contradiction, we know, but in the work world these situations still happen. Without the help of a contract for the training of the worker, what is left for the student? A title achieved in a specific field and the total lack of experience.

The most of Italian companies, long-established and well-placed in the reference market, usually prefer the employment of already competent and experienced staff. This creates a widespread problem in Italy: the impossibility for a new graduated student to enter in the workplace quickly. Nowadays, it is true that most of the guys are working, but is the work done really useful for a future recruitment? Working during the studies implies a good will and entrepreneurship of the young man who, despite the amount of study, can only be charged for university and travel costs. For the recruiter this is a very positive element in character, but what about the effective skills acquired? The called "student jobs" do not prepare for the future profession; the university course is able to do it.

You are disappointed (that’s why we wrote “Work after three year degree: this is what you need to find employment”), then, because no one wanted to believe in your skills, or because the proposals you received were not in line with what you really want to do professionally. What we have to do then? There are two ways: the educational training and the master.

Educational training or training internship

Let's start by talking about the most used educational training. This type of contract is a "pact" between the host and the promoter. The promoter, in cases of extracurricular internship (not promoted by schools or universities) is usually the employment center or job advisor; the host is the enterprise, company or free professional who assumes the task of forming the person who is taking the internship.

As is normal, internships are not all the same. There are orientation internships and internships oriented to job placement. For example, the first ones can not exceed 6 months, while those who have the purpose of putting the resource in the company can last up to 12 months. The "remuneration" aspect was governed by the state, eliminating the possibility of "working" for free. Sure, 300 euros gross are not a salary, but make the person able to face at least the daily expenses.

So, it does not look bad, after all, we are talking about at least 6 months of field education in the field for which we have studied, and with a tutor always ready to follow the progress made. But there is a problem: often the internship is not used properly. In most cases, the internship agreements are used to lower costs and therefore have low labor. The resource then becomes a new worker, perhaps employed in high production or high season periods, not supported (sometimes the tutor is only a formality imprinted on the paper) and sent him out without mercy. Even in this case a wonderful tool like the educational training is not used properly. We do not mean that all Italian companies behave incorrectly to their resources, but we can certainly say that those who work in the right way are less than the others: distinguish between the two categories at the time of signing the internship agreement it is very difficult.

There is therefore a widespread opportunity to undertake a non-existent educational training. Without a guide or a mentor there is no possibility of growth. By working autonomously, you may learn wrong mechanisms and pursue them even in the future, thinking they are correct. In conclusion, it may be time consuming and unsuccessful. But there is another way: the master.

The master

What can be better than the field experience given by the educational training? It seems impossible for a master to be better than a direct experience within the company to increase his / her work skills, but this is the case. As we have addressed before, the internship is not a bad training tool, its only problem is the misuse that it does and the almost non-existent supervision about its proper implementation.

On the other hand, the master offers, on a case-by-case, a comprehensive in-class approach with high-level professors. The subjects are carefully selected to provide adequate training at the master's time. There are many kinds of masters, but most are characterized by short times, which we know are essential for the student who wants to get started quickly in the world of work. In addition, a master not only allows you to deepen a specific field, but also provides custom support and job placement for an internship period monitored by the Institute itself.

Milan Fashion Institute, for example, collaborates with many of the major Italian and international fashion companies and gives its students the opportunity to undertake a field training course within these realities. Our Institute uses partnerships with brands such as Hugo Boss, Dolce & Gabbana, Etro, Fendi, Gucci Group and so on. Thanks to experiences like these, our students are immediately involved in the work world they prefer and learn from now on what it means working in that field.

Conclusion

Experience is an indispensable element if you want to find a job in your area of expertise. In order to be able to demonstrate their abilities, it is therefore necessary to develop them adequately through valid and monitored tools. The master not only specializes, but creates value. In addition to increasing the knowledges, the student will be able to use them in the field thus demonstrating his/her skills. He will begin to take on responsibilities, collaborating with colleagues, dealing with superiors, managing customers, and working in teams. He will begin to accumulate the experience that the work world requires.
